Relating to our Core Spirituality Principles and whilst exploring with our children, we have used Liz Mills' analogy of the doughnut and the hole.
We have explored that there is a soft, sweet outside, like us. Our body—our hands, our feet, our happy smiles, and our kind words. It’s what everyone can see.
But what about the middle of the doughnut? It has a hole, a special space in the middle. That little empty space is very important. That hole is like our spirit. It's the part of us that we can't always see, but it's where all our feelings, our beliefs, and our special ideas live.
Our spirit helps us be the best person we can be. It helps us feel happy when we play with our friends. It helps us feel kind when we share. It's the part of us that helps us care about ourselves and about others.
There are four special parts to our spirit, and they are all connected, just like the doughnut is one whole shape.
Our Spirit and Ourselves
The first part of our spirit is about knowing ourselves. It's about understanding that we are special and unique people. There is only one of each of us in the whole wide world!
Our Spirit and Others
The second part of our spirit helps us be a good friend to others. It helps us have a big heart for our friends and family. When a friend is sad, our spirit helps us feel empathy and want to help them.
Our Spirit and the World
The third part of our spirit helps us see the beauty in the world. Our spirit helps us feel happy and amazed by rainbows and tiny flowers. It helps us know how special our world is.
Our Spirit and Beyond
The last part of our spirit is a little bit of a mystery. It's about knowing that there is something bigger than just us. It's about feeling like we are a part of a much larger and wonderful world. It's that feeling we get when we look up at the stars at night and feel like we are part of something huge and special.
So, just like the doughnut has an outside and an important, special space inside, we have our bodies and our wonderful, unique spirits. Our spirit helps us care about ourselves, our friends, our world, and everything that is bigger than we are.
