Welcome to the Year 1 page!
Year one is the first year to cover the National Curriculum. This is new as the children have previously been taught using the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. As a result, some children can find the transition more difficult than others. We aim to rectify this through planning accurate and appropriate sessions adapted to our children and their needs.
PE Days
Children should come to school in their PE kits on a Tuesday and Friday. Long hair (longer than shoulder length) should be tied back and all earrings should be removed.
On Tuesday will be games outside with our PE coaches. Friday will be a mixture of games, dance and gymnastics (depending on rotation) with the class teacher.
Homework
Homework is set on a Thursday and will usually consist of both a Maths and English activity. We use MyMaths (an online forum) for most Maths activities, and we may stick some English work into homework books or set an activity via Google Classroom. This is in addition to reading.
Water bottles and coats
Children need to have a named water bottle in school each day, especially on warm days. It can be brought in on Monday and taken home on Friday for a wash. We teach the children to refill them themselves.
We aim to get the children outside and running around as much as possible so they will go outside in all weathers. Therefore, please ensure they have an adequate coat with them each day. In winter, they may also need hats, gloves and a scarf (all named please).
Snacks
Fruit is provided to all of KS1 each day, but we do not have control over what is sent to us. There are usually some of the following: bananas, apples, pears, carrots, tomatoes, green beans and raisins.
If you know that your child may not eat these options, please send them in with their own piece of fruit for snack time.
Learning to read is one of the most important things your child will learn at our school. Everything else depends on it, so we put as much energy as we possibly can into making sure that every single child learns to read as quickly as possible. We follow the Read, Write Inc scheme for reading. Please see the dedicated RWI page for more information about it.
We want your child to love reading – and to want to read for themselves. This is why we put our efforts into making sure they develop a love of books as well as simply learning to read.
Phonics is taught for 40 minutes, 4 times a week.
We send books home every Thursday, for them to be returned the following Tuesday. We ask that you write a small comment in the reading record that will accompany the books, just indicating how they read at home. It may be to highlight a specific word/ sound that they are struggling with or it may be to say they seemed confident with everything!
We assess the children every half term and group across the year according to their skills and knowledge. It could be they move groups every half term, or sometimes they may stay in a group for a little bit to build confidence and fluency.
