    Key Information

Welcome to the Year 2 page!

As our children move up, we focus on encouraging them to be more independent, expecting them to look after their own belongings, including jumpers, water bottles, coats etc. It is easier for us to return missing items to them if they are named.

    - We use Google Classroom to share key information, including homework.

    - Children will need a named coat and water bottle in school each day.

    - There is no more statutory formal testing at the end of KS1. Teacher assessment will be used, along with data from school-based assessments.

    - We mix all 3 classes at the end of Year 2 in preparation for the transition to Year 3. This will be done using information from both parents and children, as well as each teachers observations throughout the day.

    Homework - set on Tuesdays

    Consists of:

Reading - we send books home on a Thursday and they should be returned on Tuesdays.

MyMaths - online Maths activities linked to the Year 2 curriculum. There may be one or two tasks set.

Optional Spellings - we will share a list of spellings that we have been learning in school that week.

Optional Times Table Rock Stars - for times tables practice and fluency.

Optional Tasks - often life skills/ practical things such as learning to tie shoe laces.

    PE Days

Monday (class teacher - could be inside or out) & Tuesday (sports coaches - always outside).

Children should come to school wearing their PE kits on these days. For health and safety reasons, all earrings should be removed and hair that is longer than shoulder-length should be tied back.

    Reading and Phonics

    Phonics

In Year 2, we continue with the Read, Write Inc phonics programme. Once the children are fluent readers and reach the end of the programme, they move into a comprehension group where the focus is more specifically comprehension, using texts to find information, inference etc. It is designed to further children's reading competency after they have become confident with the basic mechanics of reading.

In the summer term we move onto whole class reading sessions (similar to those that take place in KS2). In these sessions we share a variety of captivating and engaging texts to ensure that children continue to enjoy reading. These sessions delve into understanding texts/ stories deeply and exploring the vocabulary used in them.

    Spellings

In Year 2 we introduce the Read, Write Inc Spelling scheme, which teaches spelling for 15 minutes every day. Research has shown that learning spellings for a weekly test does not ensure deep and long-lasting knowledge as it is high stakes and low impact (in the long run). Therefore, we now teach spellings each day, believing that spelling should be 'taught not caught'. We share the spelling rule with parents each week should they want to practice further at home.
