How does our current French curriculum match our intention?

Lessons are currently being taught on a regular and consistent basis in lower Key Stage 2 where clear progression is evident. Children are developing their skills to speak, listen and write in French to a higher level and cover a range of themes. We aim to increase provision of French so that in future years children are more regularly immersed in the French language, to include learning experiences in Key Stage 1 as well.

What’s the content of the French subject?

From September 2020, French teaching will continue to follow the CGP SALUT scheme. This is an online whiteboard resource which has activities, games, songs, stories readily available for teachers to use.

How will French link with other subjects?

Effective reading, writing and speaking and listening skills underpin the entire curriculum.  We expect children to read, write and speak just as confidently in English, Maths, Science and Foundation subjects as they do in French lessons. French topics have been assigned to each year group thoughtfully, making links between the French topics and other subjects taught during the same half term. For example, Year 4 cover The Body in French during the same half term as they learn about the Human Body in science lessons. This is to encourage increased memory of the new language by linking to other subjects.

Where are there gaps in staff knowledge?

Some members of staff have more French knowledge than others, leading to some variations in teacher confidence. The introduction of CGP SALUT scheme aims to tackle this  as lessons are ready-made with a range of resources at each teacher's fingertips. The online resource even takes care of using a computer-similated French speaker to take care of pronunciation accuracy.

Implementation

Is your subject staffed appropriately and adequately resourced in terms of time and other resources?

The CGP Salut scheme has been introduced so that all teachers can confidently plan and teach French. There has also been some class-swapping in KS2 so that teacher-skills are maximised in the provision of French and other subjects.
