  • Fundraising for the NHS, The Christie and Little Village

    Thu 30 Apr 2020

Ruby wanted to find a way to support our precious NHS, so she chose to have uniform day at home school on Tuesday and managed to raise £150 for NHS Charities Together. Lots of her friends joined in too, helping to raise even more money.

Since the London Marathon was cancelled due to COVID-19, Ellie and Evie took on the 2.6 challenge to raise money for a charity very close to their hearts, The Christie. They wanted to show their support for their family friend Kathryn, a current Christie patient. So far they have raised £1,362, which far exceeds their initial target. Ellie ran 2.6 miles on the treadmill and Evie danced 26 Tik Tok dances.

Our lovely Year 6s are fundraising for the Manchester Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Charity by exercising their way to 500 km. They started on Thursday 23rd and by the end of Day 3 of the challenge, 39 children had taken part. They have run, cycled, swam, walked, trampolined, skateboarded and played football to reach 573.47km. They are aiming for 1000km and £1000 raised by 30th April 2020. justgiving link.

Rafe took part in the 2.6 challenge and so far has raised £1,138 for charity Little Village. He completed 26 laps of an obstacle course around his garden. It involved jumping, swinging, sliding and lots of running. He finished his laps in just under half an hour with no stopping (or complaining!).

Little Village takes donations of kit for babies and children up to the age of five and redistributes it to families unable to afford to buy these items themselves. They host volunteer led drop in sessions with a free playgroup for these children and a friendly ear for their parents. During the covid crisis, Little Village continues to deliver emergency packs of essentials like nappies, wipes and sanitary products to families who can’t even afford these basics. With funding down and need increasing, never has every penny been more vital to a grassroots charity.

We are all very proud of all of our fundraising heroes!

  • PPE Update from Mrs Yeung

    Tue 28 Apr 2020

‘Within hours of the last BCS newsletter being sent out, I had a direct call from a medic enquiring about face shields and an email from procurement at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.  I was able to deliver 270 face shields to the medic the following day (70 from the design technology department at Wellington High School and 200 from Open Studios Altrincham).  Through a wonderful friend, from my former life as a nurse, the medic also received 125 face shields designed by an engineer at Nissan and produced in Nissan’s Sunderland factory. 1500 face shields were also sent to procurement from the same factory.

As we are running out of some of our original materials at Open Studios, we are working on a new and improved prototype, a sample of which is being sent to procurement at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

This has been a very humbling experience, Open Studios have sent out thousands of face shields to hospitals, police, pharmacists, paramedics and care homes both locally and as far away as Middlesex and Middlesbrough.  Frontline users are contacting us and we are speaking to people working in a variety of settings including neonatal units, radiology departments, surgeons, care in the community etc.  We are working with design technology technicians/teachers at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Wellington High School and Ashton-on-Mersey High School. The sense of community, of coming together to support each other and of hope is incredible. If we see hope as a state of mind and not as a state of the world, we feel empowered to act and our actions can transform outcomes.  This is the greatest lesson I have learned during lockdown and I have enjoyed seeing all the newsletters and videos that children, parents, teachers and teaching assistants have posted because all of these give us hope and strengthen our BCS community.’

  • Helping the community and saying thank you!

    Thu 23 Apr 2020

Miss Puntel has been busy sewing face masks for her local GP and neighbours and the Y6 girls who made bags for scrubs for the NHS had this lovely photo sent to them as a thank you.

Mrs Yeung (BCS TA) and her daughter are making face visors for the NHS, community care and nursing home staff with Jo Cushing in the community art studio in Altrincham. They are aiming to make 24,000 face visors and get them to the front line as there is a big lag between central government, procurement, distribution & front line staff.  Although the news informs us that ‘the curve is flattening’ and pressure is easing on the NHS, Covid-19 patients need ventilating for much longer than usual and Intensive Care Units remain incredibly busy with low PPE supplies. They are asking schools, leisure centres and businesses to check their first aid supplies and contact us if you have any gloves, masks or plastic aprons that you are able to donate.

Supplies can be dropped into:Open Studios: 20 Stamford New Road, Altrincham, WA14 1EJ. or contact Mrs Yeung.

Well done to Olivia (RH), family (and friends) who have donated over 200 surgical face masks, 6 coveralls and a pair of goggles. Those items are going to Wythenshawe Hospital tomorrow.

If you can help by donating equipment that would be great or you can make a donation via Altrincham Open Studios GoFundMe page

  • 4C Virtual Assembly

    Wed 22 Apr 2020

This Wednesday should have been 4C’s class assembly and in light of the lockdown and school being closed, they and Mr. Cunliffe have put together the following poem to help spread some love and hope. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x3w8rIXxFg&t=14s

A big thank you from Mr. Cunliffe to them and their families for their help in getting the videos together.
