There's always something happening at Bowdon Church School

  • Outdoor Learning Days - April 2021

    Tue 27 Apr 2021

Our first two days of the Summer term were spent outside, completing a range of activities organised by the STEM team in school; particular thanks go to Mrs Storey (outdoor learning) and Mr Hayward (DT) for organising and setting up several of the different activities. We were extremely fortunate with the good weather and great fun was had by all! Teachers were able to encourage and develop teamwork, resilience and creativity in a different environment. Activities included: an orangutan escape challenge; creating and racing sedan chairs; float the boat challenge; measuring the heights of trees and outside areas; creating our rainbow fence; and much more!

  • Past Pupil Bronya Sykes - Women's Boat Race Success!

    Tue 06 Apr 2021

Last year we reported that past pupil Bronya Sykes, was selected for the Cambridge women’s crew in the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race, but unfortunately the race could not go ahead due to the first Covid lockdown. This year she was once again selected as part of the women's Cambridge team in the 75th Women’s Boat Race on the River Great Ouse near Ely on Sunday 4th April.

We watched on the edge of our seats as the race proved to be the closest women’s race since 2011. The Oxford crew took the lead at around the halfway mark of the race, but in the end, Cambridge retook control and eventually won by about the length of a boat.

Bronya is currently in her 2nd Year at Gonville & Caius College, studying Natural Science. She is on the biological pathway of the natural sciences degree and, having had a broad introduction to ecology and evolution, she is also taking history and philosophy of science. It is an outstanding achievement to be selected for the highly competitive place in the final crew, not once but twice.

Bronya learnt to row at Trafford Rowing Club and started when she was in Year 6 at BCS; we talked about the possibility of her taking part in this traditional sporting event even then! Many staff at school remember her excellent work ethic and involvement in school life.  Her hard work and determination has paid off and we hope you will all join with us to congratulate her. We encourage all our pupils, past and present, to follow her example  by focusing on their goals and working hard to achieve success.
