VE Day 75th Anniversary Celebrations

Friday is a bank holiday so there are no lessons as we would have all been at home celebrating. Spend time with your families - you can tell them all about the impact WW2 had on lives then and now. If you want any more information or resources for making things to help you celebrate, there are lots of links below. This isn't work that has to be done, just more information for those of you who are interested.

We'd love to see pictures of you marking this special day! Don't forget, some of you will still have your WW2 costumes from our trip!

Lesson 1: RE

Sikhism Lesson 2

Last week, you watched a video about Sikhism and I asked you to remember 5 facts. They were:

  1. It is the youngest of the world’s major religions - only about 500 years old and it started in an area of India called the Punjab.

  2. Guru Nanak was the founder of Sikhism. Guru means ‘teacher’.

  3. After Guru Nanak there were 9 more Gurus.

  4. The 10th Guru decided he would be the last. He said that the holy book would replace the human Gurus. The holy book is called the Guru Granth Sahib.

  5. Sikhs worship in a building called a Gurdwara. Any building where there is a Guru Granth Sahib is called a Gurdwara.

This morning we are going to try to remember some more facts about Sikhism, including the rules that Sikhs must live by. These are called the 5Ks.

Please click on the link below and read down to the section about the 5Ks.

Click on the name of each ‘K’ and find out what it stands for. Then continue reading to the bottom of the page and do the quiz (if you don’t get 5/5 I will be worried).

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zsjpyrd/articles/zkjpkmn

Task

I now want you to create your own Sikhism Q&A Quiz.

I have done an example (attached - DO NOT COPY IT BECAUSE THE ANSWERS ARE RIDICULOUS!). I would like it to be set out exactly like mine, in two columns, with the answers at the end. The minimum number of questions is 10. Your multiple choice answers should be sensible, so that the quiz is quite challenging.

Creating a quiz will help fix this knowledge in your brain so that you don’t forget it. Your questions do not all need multiple choice answers  - some could have lines for a longer response.

You must include questions about the 5 facts you learnt last week, plus the khalsa, the 5Ks and the langar.

Share your quiz with Mrs Thompson or Mrs Storey or file it please!

Lesson 2: VE Day

This link to BBC Bitesize recaps what we learnt about WW2 in the Autumn term. Have a look through to refresh your memory.

The VE Day Information attachment below has a bit more information about VE Day and the effects of WW2.

Then have a look at the Task Sheet and pick an activity! (If you have any other VE Day activity in mind that’s fine too!)

There are more ideas / help in the links here too:

https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/siteassets/home/visit/ve-day-75/ehve-day-at-home-pack.pdf - English Heritage resource pack – has recipe ideas as well!

https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/remembrance/teachingremembrance

- there is a home resource pack you can download

There are more resources further down in the 'Friday' section if you need some more ideas!

Afternoon:

Science

Colour and colour blindness - Have a look at the attached file from Mrs Moss.

Wednesday 6.5.20

Lesson 1: Maths

Warm Up:

Go into TT Rockstars and spend 5 or 10 minutes trying to help your class beat the other class! This battle is for TODAY ONLY, between 8.40am and 3.15pm.

Main task:

We are back on White Rose this week. It is DAY 3.

If you are on Book 2 or 3 Mental Arithmetic, follow this link, watch the video and then do the activity (in your book or on paper) and mark it:

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

If you are on Book 4, 5 or 6 Mental Arithmetic, follow this link, watch the video and then do the activity (in your book or on paper) and mark it:

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-7/

Lesson 2: Reading

Read the Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus and respond to the questions.

Please read my note about quoting.

The idea of this is not that you do it quickly just to get it done.

The idea is that you rehearse your comprehension skills and remember the important elements of the story.

You can complete this task on paper or as a google doc, which you should share with Mrs Thompson or Mrs Storey.

Afternoon:

History

We are continuing with our Ancient Greece topic.

Last time, you read about who the Ancient Greeks were and watched clips about women in Ancient Greece, the theatre, and what the Ancient Greeks did for us.

Today we are going to think about the legacy of Ancient Greece - that is, how this civilisation had a lasting impact on the world.

Please follow the link and read the information:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z87tn39/articles/z8q8wmn

Task

Create a mind map which contains a summary of the information you have read about last week and this week.

You need to write ‘Ancient Greece’ in the middle and then have ‘arms’ coming off the centre with titles including ‘Democracy’, ‘Sport’, ‘Maths’, ‘Language’, ‘Theatre’, ‘Philosophy’ etc.

Use little icons (pictures) if you would like to, and colour too.

A mind map should be creative as well as functional!

If you would like more information, then use a search engine, but remember, THINK LIKE A HISTORIAN - check all of your sources are reliable.

An example mind map (not of Ancient Greece) is below.

Please take a photo of your mind-map and send it to Mrs Thompson or Mrs Storey, or put it in your folder to share with us when we return to school.

Tuesday 5.5.20

Do the sheet below on Decimals, either in your book or on paper.

The answers are at the end - please self-mark.

Main task:

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-7/

Afternoon:

Geography:

This afternoon we are continuing to look at maps and learn how to read them.

Below is a document (Map reading made easy) with some information to read and questions to answer.

It is quite long so you don’t need to print it out; just answer on paper. (It says draw a map from your house to school but if this isn’t easy you could draw a map of the downstairs of your house or another route with which you are familiar.)

The answers are at the very end. If you get all that done, here is a link to a fun quiz and some more map information.

https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/mapzone/

This is produced by Ordnance Survey - they are the company that makes all the very detailed maps of the UK that you might use if you go walking up hills!!

Monday 4.5.20

Lesson 1: SPaG

You all have tasks set on Purple Mash. If you do not know your logon, please contact Mrs Thompson or Mrs Storey.

There are 2 spelling tasks, one based on words ending in ‘ible and able’ and the other is revision of words you should be able to spell. We are expecting very high scores!

There are 4 grammar tasks

  • Grammar Vocab Quiz 5

  • Dan’s screen

  • Box the word

  • Word splits

All of this work should take about an hour. If the system glitches, leave it and try again - we know this can happen.

Lesson 2: Maths

Warm Up:

Do the sheet attached below on Statistics, either in your book or on paper.

Unless you have a protractor, you cannot complete question 7, so don’t worry about it.

The answers are also attached so please self-mark.

Main task:

If you are on Book 2 or 3 and want more of a challenge, then feel free to do the Year 7 work.

Afternoon:

Drama - Mrs Sales’ next lesson is attached below.

Games - when we return to school, we may or may not be able to have Sports Day.

If we do, it will be your last one and you need to be prepared!

So please think what events you would want to participate in and practise!

The events are: sprint, sack, skipping and bucket and ball.

FINALLY, Friday is VE Day.

Please see the link below for some brilliant singing and dancing activities with Mr Cunliffe and Mrs Sales.
